CONCORD -- The United Mt. Diablo Athletic Foundation is lagging in sign-ups for its annual 5k run to support sports in the district, the nonprofit organization's president said Friday.

Kevin Hennessy, who is coordinating Sunday's run, said fewer than 700 people had signed up. Organizers have set a goal of 2,000 runners and walkers to meet their target of $80,000. Last year, Hennessy said, about 1,600 people participated and the group raised about $60,000.

Preregistration is $25 through Saturday at www.unitedmtdiabloathletics.org; $30 on the day of the race. Registration begins at 7:15 a.m. at Newhall Park at Ayers and Turtle Creek roads in Concord.

The competitive race kicks off at 9 a.m., followed by a "fun run and walk" at 9:45 a.m., and a kiddie race at 10:30 a.m. Parking is available at Clayton Valley Charter High School, 1101 Alberta Way, Concord.
