HAYWARD -- Seven bands will take to the stage Saturday at MetalFest, a festival to showcase local groups and support the Salvation Army.

Those attending the free festival at Memorial Park are asked to donate at least one can of food to the Salvation Army, said organizer Pete Schaaphok.

The festival is sponsored by Bands4Bands, a network of local bands that help promote one another. MetalFest, one of two festivals the coalition puts on each year, features metal bands.

The other festival showcases acoustic and rock groups.

"Our organization is open to all styles of music, and we have just about every genre," Schaaphok said.

Bands that will be performing at MetalFest include headliner Kaos, plus Star Destroyer, Mystic Rage, Cyanate (from Reno), Feral Depravity, Hemorage and 42 lbs.

Schaaphok said that in addition to the festival helping feed the poor, he hopes it counters negative stereotypes about metal bands.

"We want to show we are doing something positive," he said. "We're normal people.

"Most of us are fathers and husbands and hold down jobs. We just happen to like aggressive music."

In addition to music, the festival will feature artisans selling jewelry, paintings, scarves and other handmade items. Performing bands will have merchandise for sale, and a balloon artist will be on hand to entertain children.

The Bands4Bands booth will house the canned food donation bins with the slogan, "Bring a metal can ... and see a metal band."

Those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

MetalFest started six years ago when Bands4Bands saw a need in the community for food assistance.

"This is our own festival, our own thing. We take a lot of pride in it and put in a lot of work," Schaaphok said.
