FREMONT -- Not one, but two public schools in Fremont are the recipients of the National Blue Ribbon -- an award given to public and private schools nationwide whose students achieve at high levels or which have raised the achievement of poor and minority students.

J. Haley Durham Elementary and William Hopkins Junior High were among 23 public schools and one private school in California to receive the honor this year. Tehiyah Day School in El Cerrito is the only other East Bay school to win the award.

The schools will be honored Nov. 12 and 13 in Washington, D.C. Just five years ago, Durham was the lowest-performing school in Fremont Unified.

"We are so proud," Fremont school board member Lily Mei said.
