OAKLEY -- If you're thinking about leaving the country for the holidays, you also should be thinking about making sure your papers are in order.

The city of Oakley is reminding those planning to spend the holidays or New Year's abroad to renew their passport or apply for a new one now because it can take up to six weeks -- three weeks if you're willing to pay more to expedite the service -- to process the paperwork.

The public can handle this through the city by appointment from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

To schedule an appointment or for more information, call 925-625-7000.

City offices will be closed because of furloughs and holidays on the following dates: Oct. 19, Nov. 12, Nov. 16-23, Dec. 21-Jan. 4, 2013.

Individuals who need to pack their suitcases within 14 days might have to make an appointment with the San Francisco Passport Agency by calling1-877-487-2778. More information is available at www.travel.state.gov.
