MARTINEZ -- A 51-year-old Benicia man suffered serious injuries Saturday morning when he was thrown from a bicycle after a flock of wild turkeys ran into his path.
The man was traveling westbound on Alhambra Valley Road at about 40 mph when the flock ran in front of his bike around 7:45 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. He suffered a broken jaw, broken ribs and head trauma, though he was wearing a bicycle helmet at the time of the crash.
He was airlifted to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. He was in critical condition Monday afternoon, a nursing supervisor said.
