CONCORD -- An elderly man was struck and killed by Saturday morning by an SUV driver who said he was blinded by the sun.

The driver struck the man as he crossed Clayton Road, northbound, in the crosswalk.

The driver, a 42-year-old Concord resident, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter.

Officers responded to the corner of Clayton Road and Denkinger Court at about 8:39 a.m. after they received reports of a car hitting a pedestrian.

Concord police officers found a 78-year-old Concord resident with major injuries, and he was transported to John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek, where he later died.

Police said the 2010 Mercury Mariner SUV was headed east on Clayton Road, approaching Denkinger Court, when the driver's his vision was obscured by the sun and condensation on the windshield.

The color of the traffic light at the time of the collision, along with alcohol and/or drug involvement, are still under investigation, police said.
