FREMONT -- A half-mile stretch of Niles Boulevard will be closed this week as road crews remove old pavement and repave several sections of the Niles district roadway, officials said.

Traffic was closed all day Monday, when construction work began on the boulevard between Nursery Avenue and Sullivan Underpass, said Fremont City Engineer Norm Hughes.

The city's goal is to complete the work and reopen traffic on Niles Boulevard by at least late Friday night, Hughes said.

However, rainfall -- as is expected Wednesday night -- could delay completion of the project until early next week, officials said.

The $3.1 million project began in the summer and is nearly complete, officials said.

Motorists are advised to avoid the construction area and use Mission Boulevard as a detour route.
