CONCORD -- An elderly man who was struck and killed by an SUV Saturday morning was identified Monday by the Contra Costa Coroner's Office.

Robert Vidakovich, 78, of Concord, was crossing Clayton Road at Denkinger Court at 8:39 a.m. Saturday when he was struck by a 2010 Mercury Mariner. He suffered major injuries and was taken to John Muir Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver, a 42-year-old Concord man, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter after the accident, but was later released, according to Concord police Sgt. John Nunes. He told police at the time that sunlight and condensation on his windshield had temporarily blinded him.

Detectives are awaiting the results of toxicology reports before deciding whether to seek formal charges, Nunes said.
