OAKLEY -- The city of Oakley will honor all military personnel Sunday with its first Veterans Day ceremony.

The observances will start at 11 a.m. at Civic Center Park next to City Hall, 3231 Main St.

Veterans Day is a federal holiday that commemorates the end of World War 1 between Germany and the Allied nations.

Bagpipes and a presentation of the U.S. flag will be part of the event, and 88-year-old Pearl Harbor survivor Earl Jay "Chuck" Kohler of Concord will be the keynote speaker.

Veterans groups have been invited to provide information about the kinds of help that's available to returning members of the Armed Forces.

Mayor Kevin Romick is helping to organize the ceremony along with individual veterans, the veterans motorcycle club Patriot Sentinel Riders, and East County Military Families & Friends.
