Boy Scouts' willful blindness on gays

I hope someone does a study and once again definitively shows what is already known but is not believed by a lot of people: Child molesters are not gay, they are pedophiles.

Most of them are married men with children. Boys get molested by nonfamily members because they are out in the world more.

Girls get molested more by family members. Most molesters are just looking for an opportunity; the gender of the young person is irrelevant.

The Boy Scouts of America did not end molestation by adopting an official policy of harassment of gay youths, it abetted it by hiding the reality that married adult males were, and are, doing the molestation.

Most men are not pedophiles. Most gay men are not pedophiles. The delusion that forcing gays back into the closet will protect children from pedophiles is the kind of willful blindness that makes us abettors of the molesters, rather than advocates for the children.

Letters writer should prepare for onslaught

About 10 years ago I wrote critically of Thomas Sowell in a letter to the Times, and experienced such an explosion of rage from his supporters that I turned their irate letters into a great lesson plan on democracy and free speech for my students.

Fred Serafin (Letters, Nov. 5) should be prepared for such an onslaught. It will be personal and demeaning; and since Gov. Mitt Romney lost, the letters' tenor will make tea partyers look like pansies mixed with rose petals.

A word to the wise: Be prepared and prepare your loved ones.

Recycle bin is overflowing

I'm very glad those political mailers have stopped arriving in my mailbox or being tossed on my doorstep.

This year they were merciless and my recycle bin is overflowing with the half-truths -- all this in hopes of procuring my one solitary vote based upon something I am supposed to believe without doing any diligent study.

Here then, is my early New Year's wish: Please, will someone get a proposition on the ballot that basically says, "Any political ad or mailer sent through the mail must be sent via first-class mail."

There is no way these fire starters should be burdening our already bankrupt mail system or given the priority they receive. Don't believe me? Ask your postmaster. These fliers get better attention than that mortgage payment you are sending in the mail.

To spread our wealth, spread our work ethic

Last night our country spoke and selected President Barack Obama. What a shame that Mitt Romney was destroyed early on because he had achieved the American dream and the president had a failing record on which to run.

I am afraid Obama will continue to divide and go after so many of us to "pay our fair share."

My family is one of those. My husband was a widower who had worked three jobs so his wife could stay home and raise their children. We were both school principals when we met and both age 60. He retired and went to law school, graduated and passed the bar.

I became a school superintendent and got up every morning at 3:45 a.m., worked 16-hour days and spent my evenings and Saturdays supporting student and parent events.

We both worked hard, saved all we could and lived modestly so, someday, we could retire and live in modest comfort without fear of the future. I guess that is about to end.

Our story is like many others' and my point is that before the president comes after us to spread our "wealth," he needs to spread our work ethic.
