California Highway Patrol officers said they caught a man red-handed Tuesday afternoon as he scrawled graffiti on a bus shelter along Highway 101 in San Rafael.

At about 3:55 p.m., a Marin CHP officer was entering Highway 101 southbound from the Lucas Valley Road onramp and saw a man crouched at a bus stop, writing on the shelter with a paint pen.

The man was detained and officers found a plastic bag that contained dozens of paint pens, felt-tip pens and a notebook containing sketches of graffiti tags. A small quantity of marijuana was also found, according to the CHP.

Arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor vandalism and possession of less than one ounce of marijuana was 18-year-old Antonio Romero of Richmond. He was booked into Marin County Jail.
