SAN RAMON-- An elderly man was critically injured after being struck by a car while crossing the street Friday, and police are searching for the driver who took off from the scene.

Police responded to Village Parkway at Alcosta Boulevard following reports of a hit and run accident involving a pedestrian, Lt. Dan Pratt said. Officers arrived to find an 82-year-old man gravely injured, and the driver nowhere to be found.

The man was taken to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition, Pratt said.

According to witness reports, the vehicle, described as a late model gray or silver Nissan Altima, fled the scene southbound toward Dublin on Village Parkway. Though description of the vehicle was very vague, it is likely missing its driver side rearview mirror, may have moderate damage to its left front end; the license plate may begin with the number "6," officials said.
