FREMONT -- A longtime local tradition that combines the area's many religious faiths and the Thanksgiving holiday takes place Monday.

The 51st annual Tri-City Interfaith Thanksgiving Service is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, at 43148 Mission Blvd.

The service began in 1962 when three Protestant churches gathered together to observe Thanksgiving. It has since evolved to include a wide variety of faiths, including Catholics, Jews, Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Ohlone Indians and many more.

The event is sponsored by the Tri-City Interfaith Council. This year's theme is, "A Gratitude that Unites."

Those attending are encouraged to bring refreshments to enjoy after the service, and to donate nonperishable foods for the Tri-City Volunteers, a Fremont nonprofit group.
