PITTSBURG -- If it seems like an excess number of police patrol cars are out and about this holiday weekend, it's because they are.
Officers from Pittsburg and other agencies will be targeting alcohol- and drug-impaired drivers from 7 p.m. Saturday night until 3 a.m. Sunday morning.
Preliminary fiugures for 20111 indicated that DUI arrests and fatalities were up last year after three years of declining figures, police said.
Authorities say a DUI fatality has an average financial impact of $1.4 million and an injury crash can be worth up to $70,000.
Funding for this program is from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
