Police in Richmond will increase patrols near the Iron Triangle area of the city after two men were shot fatally on the same street last week.
Richmond residents Lavelle Wallace, 37, and Armon Brown Jr., 22, were gunned down in the 500 block of Fifth Street about 48 hours apart, Richmond police Lt. Bisa French said.
Wallace was shot about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday and Brown was shot about 10:15 p.m. Thursday, French said.
The two killings being so close in proximity and in time alerted Richmond police that violence in the Iron Triangle may be getting ready to ramp up. But French said police are hopeful the shootings are isolated incidents.
"The areas of violence that are of so much concern are in North and Central Richmond, and we don't necessarily believe this was part of that," French said. "This might be something more internal, confined to that street."
The killings mark the city's 16th and 17th homicides of the year, French said. A total of 26 homicides were reported in Richmond in 2011.
Police have not made any arrests in connections with the killings, but French said one of the suspects is a well-known narcotics dealer in the area. The investigation is continuing, she said.
