OAKLAND -- After a vehicle chase on East Oakland streets, police took a suspect into custody in connection with a Tuesday morning shooting that left a man in serious condition with multiple gunshot wounds.

The shooting happened about 9:10 a.m. near the intersection of East 31st Street and 13th Avenue, a block away from Highland Hospital. The 26-year-old victim was confronted on the street by the suspect, who began shooting at him, police said.

Police said the gunman then fled on foot southbound on 13th Avenue. Witnesses saw the suspect get into a car and were able to get the license plate of the vehicle.

About 10:30 a.m., the car was spotted in the Fruitvale district and a chase ensued. The driver finally stopped about 10:38 a.m. in the 3100 block of Coolidge Avenue, where he was taken into custody, police said. A gun was apparently thrown from the car during the chase on city streets and was recovered by officers.

Police said the suspect is a 21-year-old Oakland man. His name was not released. No motive was released for the shooting or whether the men knew each other.

The victim, an Oakland resident, was in serious condition at the hospital after being driven there by a passer-by.

The incident occurred in the same block as the fatal shooting on July 27 of Rafael Cortes Garcia, 41, who was gunned down outside his home in the 3100 block of 13th Avenue. Garcia, a mechanic who worked two jobs, had just arrived home about 7:20 p.m. when he was confronted by at least one armed man, possibly more, police said.

Police don't believe the two shootings are related.
