RICHMOND -- A man suspected in the drive-by shooting death of a Richmond man earlier this year has been arrested, officials announced Tuesday.
Homicide detectives from the Contra Costa Sheriff's Office arrested 19-year-old Leon Norford of Richmond on suspicion of killing 23-year-old Lonnie Peterson in North Richmond on April 17, Sheriff's Office spokesman Jimmy Lee said.
Police found Peterson lying on the ground in the 500 block of Market Avenue with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. He died the next day.
Another shooting victim nearby was shot in his leg and was treated and released.
Detectives identified Norford as a suspect and arrested him after the case was presented to the District Attorney's Office, Lee said. He also has been charged with attempted homicide and gang participation.
Norford remains in custody at County jail in Martinez on an unrelated case.
The Peterson shooting is one of 18 homicides in Richmond this year. There were 24 killings in 2011.
