ATWATER -- Employees and a nearby neighborhood were evacuated Tuesday night following an explosion and ammonia leak at a Dole facility in Atwater, but no injuries were reported, the Merced Sun Star reported.

The explosion was reported at 6:38 p.m. at the Atwater Dole plant at 7916 Bellevue Road, when employees called 911, the newspaper reported.

Around 100 gallons of ammonia were released by the explosion, but no one was hurt. The leak has been stopped.

About 175 employees were evacuated from the plant, and residents on Vine Street were evacuated from their homes and sent to a nearby community center. Residents were allowed to begin returning to their homes about 8:30 p.m., the Sun Star said.

The cause of the explosion is unknown.
