HAYWARD -- Two men were arrested on suspicion of residential burglary Thursday morning after a brief police search that shut down a street, authorities said.

The suspects, Gustavo Ayala Garcia, 19 of Newark but possibly living in East Palo Alto, and Jaime Martinez Arroyo, 34, of East Palo Alto were arrested on suspicion of burglarizing a house in the 27000 block of Jennings Way about 9:30 a.m., said police spokesman Lt. Roger Keener.

A woman who lives nearby called police after she spotted two men walking around the back of her grandmother's home, Keener said.

Officers arrived just as the men were walking from the back of the home with some of the woman's possessions, and the suspects took off through the backyard and began jumping fences, police said.

Police caught up to one man as he jumped over a fence onto Jennings Way and enlisted a police dog to search for the second man, who was found hiding in a backyard shed on the adjacent block of Underwood Avenue, Keener said.

Both men were arrested at the scene, Keener said. One of the suspects was bitten by a police dog when he was found and was taken to a hospital to be treated for the injury.

Keener said officers discovered a key in one of the suspect's pockets that they initially believed belonged to a stolen vehicle. Though the vehicle turned out to belong to the suspect, property was found in his car that led officers to believe that the pair may be responsible for other burglaries throughout the area.
