HAYWARD -- Hayward police have been awarded a state $500,000 grant to continue their anti-gang program.

The police created Hayward Positive Alternatives for Youth with an earlier state grant that will expire at the end of the year. The police partner with the school district and local nonprofit agencies to reduce truancy, suspensions, expulsions, and alcohol and drug abuse.

The two-year grant will help fund a gang prevention specialist and two case managers, plus cover program expenses.
