CONCORD -- A 21-year-old man died Friday afternoon after he was struck by a vehicle while riding his skateboard, police said.

The man was struck around 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Monument Boulevard and Erickson Road by a 21-year-old woman driving a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe, according to Concord police.

Though the man was transported to John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek for treatment, he later died from his injuries, police said.

The skateboarder was a Concord resident and the driver of the vehicle is from Clayton, although police have not released their identities.

Police said a preliminary investigation found that the woman was driving eastbound on Monument Boulevard when she struck the skateboarder, who was crossing in the crosswalk northbound at Erickson Road.

The color of the traffic light at the time of the collision, along with alcohol and/or drug involvement, is still under investigation.
