In her first home game and first game since a national media blitz, 50-year-old transsexual women's basketball player Gabrielle Ludwig scored eight points and pulled six rebounds in Mission College's 103-58 win Saturday afternoon.

National print media and local television crews attended Saturday's game on the Santa Clara campus to watch the 6-feet-8 Fremont resident, who had a sex change operation in July, playhoops. Ludwig, a Desert Storm veteran, may be the first athlete to play collegiate basketball as both genders. She played junior college basketball for the Nassau Community College men's team 30 years ago.

In Saturday's blowout, Ludwig went 4 for 7 from the field, and also blocked a shot and tallied a steal and foul in 12 minutes.

"I think she did very, very well in the time she got in," coach Corey Cafferata said. "She's still getting her wind back."

Mission College improved to 6-4 with the win against Lassen Community College.

The Lady Saints next play Dec. 17 at 3 p.m. against College of the Redwoods in the San Joaquin Delta Tournament in Stockton.
