BYRON -- A young woman and child who were killed Friday in a head-on collision between an 18-wheel semi-truck and a sedan on Byron Highway were identified Monday morning.
Margarita Velasquez, 21, of Pittsburg and her 6-year-old son Dejohn ¿Velasquez died in the 3:19 p.m. crash on Byron Highway at Clifton Court Road.
A 63-year-old man who was driving the big-rig told the California Highway Patrol that he was traveling north on Byron Highway, when a blue Oldsmobile sedan, traveling south, swerved as if the driver lost control, and slammed head-on into the truck.
Margarita Velasquez was airlifted to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her son was pronounced dead at the scene. CHP spokesman John Franzen said the boy was wearing a seat belt and was in the back seat of the Oldsmobile.
It remains unknown if drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash, and investigators still are determining how fast the Oldsmobile was going. The speed limit on that stretch of highway is 55 mph.
The driver of the truck was uninjured.
