MARTINEZ -- A 35-year-old San Pablo man was sentenced to 84 years to life in state prison Friday for sexually abusing two female relatives when the girls were 7 years old.

A Contra Costa County jury convicted Jose Enrique Hernandez of attempted sexual intercourse with a child under age 10; 10 counts of lewd and lascivious acts on a child under age 14; and nearly a dozen charge enhancements for substantial sexual contact.

Hernandez was living in Hercules when he sexually abused one of the victims from 2005 to 2007, deputy district attorney Chad Mahalich said. The second victim also was 7 when Hernandez sexually abused her sometime between November 2010 and February 2011 in San Pablo.

Hernandez confessed to the crimes to police after his April 2011 arrest, but he testified at his trial that the girls lied and he was pressured into making a false confession, Mahalich said.

At the sentencing hearing Friday, Judge Lewis Davis ordered that Hernandez pay $900,000 to one of the victims and $100,000 to the other to compensate for the emotional distress he caused the girls, Mahalich said.
