SACRAMENTO -- Seemingly awakened by the mass shooting rampage in Newton, Conn., that killed 20 children and seven adults, legislators around the country are taking a fresh look at gun laws.

And though California has the toughest gun laws in the nation, a handful of legislators have proposed new restrictions.

Here is a summary of planned measures expected to be taken up when the Legislature returns to session next month.

  • Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, SB47: Would prohibit semi-automatic weapons like AR-15s and AK-47s from having devices known as "bullet buttons," which allow easy reloading of multi-bullet ammunition clips.

  • Sen. Kevin De Leon, D-Los Angeles (no bill yet): Wants to require annual permits for ammunition purchases.

  • Sen. Ted Lieu, D-Torrance (no bill yet): Wants to mandate school safety plans.

  • Sen. Ted Gaines, R-Roseville (no bill yet): Wants to deny weapons to mentally ill people
