MARTINEZ -- A Concord man has been convicted of 14 felonies for sexually abusing two girls over a six-year period, the Contra Costa District Attorney's Office said Friday.
Gary Anthony Carter, 51, faces a punishment of up to 126 years to life in state prison at his sentencing Jan. 18.
A jury found Carter guilty Wednesday of 10 counts of rape, three counts of lewd acts on a child, and one count of forcible oral copulation, and charge enhancements for substantial sexual contact for abuse that began in 2006 when the victims were 9 and 12 years old.
The abuse, which occurred in Antioch and Concord, stopped in 2011 when the elder victim called police and had Carter arrested, deputy district attorney Mary Blumberg said.
"That's when we found out his long history of sexually abusing young girls," Blumberg said.
The jury heard evidence about three previous victims, two of whom Carter abused in the early 1990s, and a third that he abused in 2011, Blumberg said. Two of those victims took the witness stand.
