MOUNTAIN VIEW -- Speed played a role in a fiery crash into a tree early Sunday that left a young woman dead, police said.

But, it wasn't clear why the woman, whose name has not been released, veered from eastbound Central Expressway into a large tree in a center median near Highway 85 around 12:20 a.m., said Mountain View police spokesman Sean Thompson.

After fire crews put out the flames engulfing the Chevrolet sedan, the woman, who was in her 20s, was pronounced dead at scene, Thompson said. She was alone in the car.

Soeed was a factor in the crash, but police didn't say how fast they thinking she was driving.
