REDLANDS - Memorial Day weekend is going to the arts.

Planners are in the organizing stages of first Redlands Festival of Arts that will celebrate the art community.

Several activities are planned for Smiley Park, including a juried art show that will offer more than $7,000 in prizes, performances from the Redlands Shakespeare Festival, Redlands Theatre Festival and Lifehouse Theater and music performances from local musicians.

The festival is being organized by former Councilman Jerry Bean and real-estate agent Shirley Harry.

They anticipate more than 100 artists will participate and are seeking applications and sign-ups for volunteers.

"We are planning something for everyone," Bean said.

Bean and Harry met last year to discuss plans for a festival and she jumped on board.

The festival aims to make more people aware of art programs offered in the city, Harry said.

"And to celebrate Redlands history as the center of arts in its 125th anniversary," she said. "What (this event) means to the community is that, hopefully, we bring visitors to the (area) who will appreciate and understand what we have to offer in cultural arts."

A 10-person committee is planning the festival with the intention of making it an annual event, organizers said.

In addition, the group is in the process of incorporating as a non-profit and has applied for that status.

The event has been endorsed by the Redlands Art Association, the Redlands Cultural Arts Commission and Art Connection.

Among the offerings planned are the annual Art in the Park usually held on Mother's Day weekend, a special exhibit on historical Redlands artwork hung in the A.K. Smiley Public Library, and performing arts at The Contemporary Club that will feature performances by the three Redlands theater groups.

LifeHouse Theater's Wayne Scott has volunteered an original play by his company that is being described as a "light-hearted and humorous" production.

Redlands Theatre Festival will perform excerpts from "The Marvelous Wonderettes," a musical comedy from its 2012 season.

Groups interested in performing can contact Bean at 909-816-9913 or visit redlandsfestivalarts.com for information.

Artists and volunteers also can contact Harry at 909-748-7002.

Festival hours will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 25 and 26.
