SAN JOSE -- San Jose State coach George Nessman on Monday denied an Internet report that he has been fired.

"No, we have not been fired -- at least no one has told me that," Nessman said in a text message to this newspaper following practice Monday evening.

The report, from the website "Parsing The WAC," said that SJSU athletic director Gene Bleymaier had dismissed Nessman and his staff, effective immediately. The identity of the interim coach was "unknown," according to the report.

Nessman's job security is tenuous, at best.

The Spartans have lost 10 consecutive games and are 4-24 in conference play the past two seasons.

"Those are the kind of things you worry about after the season's over,'' Nessman said last week when asked about his future at SJSU. "Right now, I'm focused on coaching the team."
