LONG BEACH - A man who surrendered to Los Angeles police after allegedly fatally shooting his wife and wounding his stepson is being held on $1 million bail, police said.

Henry Reyes, 36, was arrested and booked for murder and attempted murder and being held at Long Beach City Jail, Nancy Pratt, a spokeswoman with the Long Beach Police Department, said.

The shooting occurred 9:50 p.m. Monday. When officers arrived at the Country Woods Apartments in the 4800 block of Clair Del Avenue, just south of Del Amo Boulevard, they discovered Lorena Reyes, 41, and her teenage son shot inside their apartment, Pratt said.

Lorena was pronounced dead at the scene, and her son was transported to a local hospital where he remains in critical but stable condition, Pratt said.

Reyes fled the scene, but surrendered to police in East Los Angeles because he knows officers there and felt more comfortable there, said Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Richard French.

Reyes was taken into custody about 10:45 p.m. in the area of North Broadway and Eastlake Avenue, said Sgt. Rick Colombia of the Los Angeles Police Department's Hollenbeck Division.

Based on the preliminary investigation, the couple recently separated, and Reyes wasn't living at the apartment. The shooting escalated from a domestic incident, and detectives are investigating whether the husband and wife have a history of domestic violence, Pratt said.
