An elderly pedestrian struck and killed by a driver was identified Wednesday by the Los Angeles County Coroner's office as Michael Handebeaux of Long Beach.
The 71-year-old was hit near the intersection of Redondo Avenue and 11th Street in Long Beach.
The Long Beach police patrol officers arrived at the scene at 10 a.m. and discovered a black 2006 Lincoln Mercury near the intersection and Handebeaux lying in the roadway.
Long Beach Fire Department paramedics responded and transported the victim to a local hospital. Handebeaux was pronounced dead at about 3 p.m.
The driver, an 89-year-old resident of Huntington Beach, was released at the scene with no charges pending.
The preliminary investigation indicated that the Lincoln was traveling southbound on Redondo Avenue when the pedestrian attempted to cross at an uncontrolled intersection, and was struck by the vehicle.
The driver stopped to render aid and a witness to the accident called 911.
