A driver was killed Saturday night in a crash in Novato when a car slammed into a concrete overpass column and burst into flames, the CHP reported.
Officer Andrew Barclay said witnesses reported seeing the silver Honda traveling at a high rate of speed northbound in the fast lane of Highway 101 at around 6:40 when it veered across all the lanes to take the exit to Highway 37. The vehicle struck the column and came to rest on its roof.
As officers arrived, the car became fully engulfed with the solo occupant trapped inside. The Novato Fire Department responded, but the driver was deceased by the time the fire was extinguished. The gender of the victim wasn't immediately known.
The offramp was closed for about three hours until the occupant could be removed and the car taken away.
Barclay said the accident caused a minor backup on northbound Highway 101.
