SANTA CLARA -- Lost in the awe of Colin Kaepernick's athletic ability is how good of a quarterback he is, new 49ers receiver Anquan Boldin said.

"From the outside looking in, you hear about how athletic he is," Boldin said. "A lot of times, the quarterback aspect gets overlooked. I think if people have a chance to play with him or see him up close, they'll understand how good of a quarterback he actually is."

Boldin has always been known as the type of a receiver who can make plays even if he's covered.

"He makes it very easy on quarterbacks," Kaepernick said of Boldin. "He's a very savvy guy. He's played a lot of games, knows what the defense is doing and knows where the weak spots on the defense are."

That would seem to mesh well with Kaepernick's ability to scramble and keep plays alive.

"With Colin, the play is never dead," Boldin said. "You just have to keep that in the back of your head. Even if the defense has a great call on you or it looks like the play is broken down, he has a knack of getting outside the pocket and being able to find receivers."

The duo is still in the process of building their quarterback-receiver relationship and some of that will likely need in-game scenarios to develop.

"That is just a trust thing," Boldin said. "I think the more you do it and the more the receiver comes through for you, the more you trust him. We haven't been in that many situations where we could work on it.

"As a receiver, my thought is, every time a quarterback throws the ball to you, the more times you complete the pass the more confidence he'll have in you."

Kaepernick said developing that bond is crucial.

"That's the most important thing," Kaepernick said. "If a receiver and quarterback aren't on the same page, there's no play you can draw up that's going to work out well."
