OAKLAND -- The Oakland Raiders are hosting their first 5K run and walk at the O.co Coliseum in September and they hope it will draw a crowd and continue for years to come.
After working with the Oakland Running Festival over the last two years, the Raiders decided to take it a step further and celebrate physical fitness and the return of football in their own way. Raiders staff, and possibly even players, will make an appearance at the 5K run/walk.
The event will take place on Sept. 14, the day before the Raiders' regular season home-opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The race will begin inside the Coliseum on Saturday morning and conclude at the Coliseum's westside entrance.
"We thought this would be a natural fit in order for us to get involved with the community, provide a great event that celebrates our 2013 season and also get a chance to" reach out to fans, said Walter Brock, account executive for group sales and fundraising.
The 5K starts at 9 a.m. People can jog or walk at their own pace. There will be a post-race celebration where there will be a DJ, food and interactive games to engage the youth.
The $50 registration fee includes a ticket to the Raiders game on Sept. 15. The Kids Fun Run is $15, however it does not include a game ticket. Kids will receive a special Raiders-themed gift.
"The long-term goal is to do this annually," Brock said, "and to be able to touch our fans and provide a unique opportunity where we're promoting physical activity and also fun at the same time."
