OAKLAND -- Four people were shot outside an Uptown District hair salon after a thief they caught breaking into a car came back with a gun, police said Sunday.
The Saturday daytime shooting in front of Badd Boyz Hair Salon and Babering in the 1700 block of Telegraph Avenue came amid a violent weekend, in which two people were killed at a birthday party and a woman was killed as she and her boyfriend drove her 5-year-old to a fast-food restaurant.
"He had to be out of his mind," Dwayne McCarther, a part owner of hair salon, said Sunday. "These guys don't care anymore."
The shooting was reported at about 4:10 p.m. after a man broke into a woman's car and stole her purse, according to police. The woman's boyfriend chased the thief and was able to get the purse back, but the alleged thief soon returned on a bicycle with a gun, police said.
McCarther said one of his employees recognized the man and was planning to confront him when he pulled out the gun and began firing into the salon. Of the four wounded, three work at the salon, including one man who was shot four times, said McCarther. All four are expected to survive.
McCarther said the employees were looking out for their co-worker and trying to stop a burglary. He said police are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses.
"The guys who got shot are heroes," he said. "We look out for each other. We're a family here. This was a crime against us. My prayer is I hope they catch him."
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the gunman. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call 510-238-3821 or the tip line at 510-773-2805.
