The A's are on the verge of bringing back catcher Kurt Suzuki to help with their depleted catching corps, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Friday morning.
Suzuki will be traded from Washington to the A's for Single-A pitcher Dakota Bacus, with the Nationals assuming part of Suzuki's remaining salary this season, according to the Chronicle.
"Thank (you) Nats fans for the love and support!" Suzuki wrote Friday morning on his Twitter account. "I enjoyed every minute. First class [organization]. It's a business and now it's time to go get that ring. ... Hello Oakland! Pumped to be back and ready to go make a run at this. Let's do this!"
"I was kind of shocked, but very pumped," Suzuki told the Chronicle as he boarded a plane from Chicago to Baltimore. "I wouldn't have ever thought of this happening, but everyone knows how much I love and respect Bob Melvin and the coaching staff there. It's going to be fun."
Suzuki, 29, was a popular figure among A's fans, teammates and coaches during his 5 1/2 seasons in Oakland. He's been serving as the Nationals' backup catcher to Wilson Ramos. Suzuki, who is hitting just .222/.283/.310 in 79 games this season, has started just 12 of the past 42 Washington games. He had three home runs and 25 RBIs in 252 at-bats for the Nationals.
The A's are expected to platoon the right-handed hitting Suzuki at catcher with Stephen Vogt, Oakland's only other healthy catcher. Derek Norris, whose emergence last season led to Suzuki being dealt to Washington last August for minor-league catcher David Freitas, is expected to be placed on the disabled list. Norris broke the left big toe on his left foot on Tuesday.
Oakland is also without catcher John Jaso, who is on the disabled list with lingering concussion symptoms.
Suzuki, who should join the A's in Baltimore, the Chronicle reported, helped the Nationals win the National League East last season. But Washington is struggling at 63-64 this season. He has a $9.25 million team option for the 2014 season, which isn't likely to be picked up by the A's. The buyout on Suzuki's contract is $650,000.
Washington will be receiving 22-year-old Dakota Bacus, who is 9-5 with a 3.56 ERA for the A's Beloit team in the Midwest League.
