OAKLAND -- A 29-year-old man has been charged with murder after the death of his 56-year-old father from injuries sustained in a vicious beating at their East Oakland home Aug. 6, authorities said Friday.
The father, Afu Tomasi, who had been on life support since the attack, died Aug. 9 at Highland Hospital.
Police said the son, Hiole Tomasi, had already been charged with assault with a deadly weapon but the complaint was amended Thursday to include a charge of murder.
Hiole Tomasi briefly appeared in court Friday morning for arraignment. He is scheduled to enter a plea Sept. 6. He is being held without bail.
Relatives who attended the arraignment declined to comment.
Police suspect Hiole Tomasi used his fists and household items to beat his father inside their home in the 4700 block of Virginia Street in the Maxwell Park area about 6:45 p.m. Aug. 6.
Police were summoned to the home by neighbors who reported a loud disturbance.
Afu Tomasi, a cement contractor, was found unconscious and covered with blood inside the home. The son, who was the only other person present at the house, was arrested without incident, police said.
He has denied attacking his father, police said. Sgt. Randy Brandwood said police are trying to determine a motive.
