GILROY -- A Santa Cruz man who died Saturday morning in a solo vehicle crash on Highway 152 has been identified by the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office as 33-year-old Azmi Munoz-Montesino.
Gilroy police say Munoz-Montesino was driving on Hecker Pass Highway at about 2:20 a.m. when he collided with a tree, which caused a fire underneath the vehicle.
Preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle may be associated with reports of a hit and run traffic collision with parked vehicles near First and Hanna street just prior to the report of the collision on Hecker Pass Hwy, according to police.
The factors leading to the cause of the collision are currently under investigation. The investigation will determine what caused the collision and if alcohol or other intoxicants may have contributed to the collision.
The investigation is currently being investigated by the Gilroy Police Department's major accident investigation team (MAIT).
