SACRAMENTO -- Gov. Jerry Brown signed a law Monday expected to help protect children who participate in youth sports by creating a consistent background check policy for volunteer coaches.

Assembly Bill 465, co-authored by Assemblywoman Susan Bonilla, D-Concord, and Assemblyman Brian Maienschein, R-San Diego, clarifies that all community sports programs in California are authorized to administer criminal background checks on volunteer coaches, according to a news release. It also authorizes such programs to request subsequent arrest notifications from the Department of Justice.
