LIVERMORE -- Five people were hospitalized and one arrested Tuesday morning after a suspected drunken driver in a stolen truck led police on a chase and crashed into three vehicles, police said.
The suspect was identified as Arthur Salvetti, 43, a transient known to frequent Oakland. He was arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft, drunken driving and eluding officers after the early morning chase on Las Positas Road sent five people to the hospital with minor injuries, police said. Las Positas Road was closed for several hours after the crash.
Police began receiving reports at 6:54 a.m. of a suspicious man in the 5000 block of Preston Avenue, and more residents in the 4700 block of Arroyo Vista called as officers responded, Officer John Hurd said.
When officers arrived, a large truck with glass racks on the side peeled away from the area at high speed.
When officers tried to pull the man over, he took off eastbound down Las Positas Road, Hurd said. Officers ended the chase when the suspect began driving erratically, but the truck kept going and hit three other cars in the area of Bennett Drive before rolling onto its side.
The drivers and passengers in those vehicles, five people total, were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, Hurd said. Salvetti was taken into custody, and officers discovered he was on parole for prior burglaries.
Police also discovered that the glass truck had been stolen from the 4700 block of Arroyo Vista when they contacted the registered owner, Hurd said. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
