ANTIOCH -- A man driving a stolen box truck led officers on a vehicle pursuit Saturday before he abandoned the truck and attempted to run away, police said.

Eric Lehtinen, 45, who faces multiple charges, is also accused of almost striking an officer with the truck during a traffic stop shortly before the pursuit began.

The officer initially spotted the truck at 6:38 p.m. at West 9th Street near A Street, where the truck almost hit his patrol car as it sped past, police said.

After the officer pulled the driver of the truck over, Lehtinen drove directly at the officer as he was getting out of his patrol car, and then led officers on a pursuit along A Street, police said.

Lehtinen abandoned the truck in the Highway 4 construction site near A and Drake streets, where he attempted to run away, police said.

It was later determined the truck was stolen a short time earlier from Ordaz Cultured Marble & Onyx, Inc. on West 10th Street, according to police.

Along with stealing the truck, Lehtinen is suspected of burglarizing the business. He was booked in County Jail in Martinez.
