OAKLAND -- A man driving in a stolen car was arrested Wednesday morning after a police chase ended in a crash on Interstate 580, police said.
The pursuit began when police tried to stop the stolen car in the area of 33rd and West streets at 8:41 a.m. and continued onto eastbound I-580, police said. He eventually crashed the SUV into the center divide a few miles away near Grand Avenue, and fled on foot on the freeway, ditching the car, according to police.
The man vaulted a fence and ran through the yard at Lakeview Elementary School, now an Oakland Unified School District administrative building. The building was put on lockdown for approximately 15 minutes, according to district spokesman Troy Flint.
The man was arrested around 9 a.m. in the 400 block of Crescent Street. His name was not immediately released.
The crash initially shut down two lanes on eastbound I-580. The lanes were reopened by 10:30 a.m.
