WALNUT CREEK -- A rally to protest U.S. military involvement in Syria will be held 10 a.m. to noon Saturday on Main Street and Mt. Diablo Boulevard in downtown Walnut Creek.
Sponsored by the Mt. Diablo Peace and Justice Center, the protest, named "No New War vs. Syria," is an attempt to influence local elected officials and to make residents' voices heard, according to a news release from the center. Congress is likely to begin voting next week on military involvement in Syria.
Center officials say civilians must be protected, the violence must end, and that chemical weapons should not be used, but also that U.S. military intervention in Syria is not the way to go.
"We shouldn't make matters worse on the ground just to answer war crimes with a limited and largely symbolic show of force," according to the release.
