HAYWARD -- A man and woman arrested after crashing a stolen vehicle during a police chase in Hayward Thursday have been identified as Derek Teutschel and Veronica Aguilar, both 31, of Hayward, police said.

About 7 a.m. officers spotted a man and a woman in a brown older-model Ford Explorer that was stolen out of Hayward and attempted to stop the SUV at Foothill Boulevard and Mattox Road, said Alameda County Sheriff's Office Sgt. J.D. Nelson.

The driver, a male suspect, refused to stop the vehicle and ended up crashing off Foothill Boulevard near Grove Way near downtown, Nelson said.

After the crash, police caught the female suspect, but the male suspect took off running from the car and holed up in a garage off Cotter Way for several hours, said Hayward Police Lt. Mark Stuart, whose agency assisted in the case.

About 11:50 a.m. someone saw the male suspect leave the garage and police chased him again. A police K-9 officer eventually found the suspect hiding in brush on a hillside just east of Foothill Boulevard and the suspect was arrested.

Both were later arrested on suspicion of driving a stolen vehicle and for evading police, Nelson said.
