REDWOOD CITY -- A drug ripoff gone wrong in a San Bruno garage led to gunfire and left a South San Francisco man facing attempted murder charges, a prosecutor said Tuesday.

Oceanic Jonuku Latu, 24, is accused of shooting a 29-year-old Redwood City man during a struggle on May 10. Latu was due to enter a plea to the attempted murder and first-degree robbery charges Tuesday in San Mateo County Superior Court, Assistant District Attorney Al Serrato said.

The trouble started when the victim and another person arranged to buy a pound of marijuana from someone they had never met, prosecutors said. They were told to go to a home on the 1100 block of Cherry Avenue to complete the deal.

But Latu and another man confronted the victims at gunpoint, Serrato said, and a fight started. The Redwood City man was shot during the tussle but survived. Latu and the other man escaped with cash and one of the victims' phones, Serrato said. Police have not arrested the other suspect.

Latu is being held in Redwood City without bail.
