HAYWARD -- A man found unconscious in the hallway of a Hayward hotel over the weekend has been identified as 53-year-old Mark Mowdy, an Alameda County coroner's spokeswoman said Monday.

Mowdy, who police said is a transient whose last known address was San Leandro, was identified by the coroner's office after an autopsy took place about 11 a.m.

Officers were dispatched at 6:41 a.m. Saturday to the Phoenix Lodge at 500 W. A St. after a hotel guest found Mowdy in a second-floor hallway, said Sgt. Ken Forkus.

He was taken to a hospital in critical condition where he was pronounced dead a short time later, Forkus said.

The coroner did not released Mowdy's cause of death.

Police said Mowdy was not a registered guest at the hotel. They also said he was known to frequent Alameda.

Investigators said Mowdy suffered some injuries before his death, but did not elaborate on what they were.
