SAN DIEGO -- Border Patrol agents say they have arrested a man who tried to swim from Mexico to the United States while toting a duffel bag filled with more than 50 pounds of marijuana.

The U.S. Border Patrol's San Diego office said Monday the man was apprehended about a mile north of the border after agents received reports of someone swimming north late at night.

When agents arrived shortly before midnight Thursday they saw someone floating on a bag in the Pacific Ocean, about 600 yards from shore.

The 55-year-old man, whose name was not released, told authorities he was from Mexico.

He was taken into custody after a search of his bag uncovered about 52 pounds of pot.
