PLEASANTON -- As police continue to probe the attack on a 51-year-old Pleasanton man who was beaten into a coma last Saturday, investigators now say they have only one person of interest -- an 18-year-old man -- in the case.

Police said Tuesday that four teens were deemed "persons of interest,'' but on Wednesday police said the three Pleasanton teens are considered witnesses only at this time. An 18-year-old man, who does not live in Pleasanton, is still considered a person of interest, but police did not say he was a suspect. His name was not released and police did not give further details about the investigation. All four have been cooperative and met with investigators, police said.

David Lamont, the founder of a Pleasanton marketing agency, was home with his wife and two teenage daughters shortly after midnight Saturday when he heard loud voices coming from a field at the end of Middleton Place, a cul-de-sac of million-dollar homes southeast of Bernal Avenue.

Teens often gather on the grassy hillside to talk and party, neighbors said. Lamont reportedly went outside to confront the noisy group and did not immediately return to his home.

Police dispatchers received a 911 hang-up call at 12:11 a.m. Saturday from Middleton Place. When officers arrived to investigate, they found a woman outside with her husband, who was lying unconscious and brutally beaten in the middle of the road.

He remains in critical condition at Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley.

Because he is in a coma and investigators can't interview Lamont, they are reviewing video surveillance in the neighborhood and are asking the public for help. One witness told police a dark-colored SUV left the neighborhood shortly after the attack.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Pleasanton police at 925-931-5100.
