SUNNYVALE -- A man living at a relative's in-home daycare center in Sunnyvale has been jailed on suspicion of sexually abusing two young children, authorities said.
Jose Cristobal Velandria, 68, was arrested Oct. 2 and charged Friday with five counts of lewd and lascivious acts on a child under the age of 14 after one of two elementary-school-age girls reported the alleged abuse to her parents, who then told police.
Velandria lives at the home that housed Belen's Childcare in the 700 block of South Wolfe Road, police said. They said he's related to the owner of the business but that whether he was an employee is unclear.
Deputy District Attorney Murat Ozgur said one of the accusers was confirmed to be under the supervision of the daycare business and that the second child's connection to it is still being determined.
Velandria had no known criminal history in Santa Clara County prior to this case.
Ozgur, who works in the District Attorney's sexual assault unit, said parents should carefully research potential daycare providers.
"Know your daycare facility really well and research it," Ozgur said.
He added parents must also work to ensure their children are comfortable enough to point out possible abuse.
"One of the most important things is to keep the lines of communication with your children open so that if anything does happen they can tell you," Ozgur said.
Because of Velandria's access to children, investigators are exploring the possibility of additional victims, and urge parents who suspect their child might have been victimized to contact Detective Michael Mendoza at 408-730-7130.
