Oakland -- Eight finalists from the Beyond Idol project will perform at the grand finale 7:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at Yoshi's Oakland.

Beyond Idol is an artistic development program and competition for former and current foster youth and young people ages 16-24 in Alameda County. The project, which is in its second year, was started by Beyond Emancipation, the county's primary provider of services for former foster youth.

This year, eight finalist in three categories -- hip-hop, spoken word and vocals -- will vie for the Beyond Idol Championship title.

Brandon McFarland, aka 1-O.A.K. (One of a Kind), a vocalist, songwriter, producer, and member of the Honor Roll Crew, will also perform.
